The University Center for International Studies at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a one-year (with the possibility of renewal), full-time, twelve-month, appointment-stream (non-tenure-stream) postdoctoral associate beginning August 2022. The successful applicant will have an opportunity to contribute to the reconceptualization of European/area studies at the University of Pittsburgh, while also gaining valuable experience in higher education administration as an alternative academic (“Alt-Ac”) career. The European Studies Center has embarked on a multi-year project to “reimagine area studies of Europe” to better serve students entering a new future of work. In addition to helping to advance this mission, this position will provide operational management of the European Studies Center and manage the ESC’s external grants in conjunction with the director of the center. The European Studies Center at Pitt is a nationally-recognized area studies center, which has received funding from both the U.S. Department of Education as a National Resource Center in European Studies and from the European Union, which has awarded it the distinction of “Center of Excellence” in EU Studies since 1998. Academic duties will include: contributing to the intellectual development of the Critical Area Studies of Europe (CASE) and Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity in Area Studies (IDEAS) initiatives while aligning with Pitt’s Global Plan and strategic priorities of the University Center for International Studies (UCIS); overseeing the organization and implementation of a coherent events calendar for the center during the academic year; serving as lead instructor for “What Is Europe?” (Fall semester), which serves as a core introductory course for ESC certificate students and involves delivering lectures and coordinating guest lectures from ESC-affiliated faculty, and as lead instructor for a one-credit “Europe Today” course (Spring Semester), which will be organized in conjunction with the European Union Studies Association and feature guest lectures from EUSA’s board and membership. Administrative duties will include: managing existing grants, implementing planned grant activities, overseeing the collection of data for reporting purposes, and preparing grant reports; serving as the lead grant writer for additional new or renewing grants; ensuring timely submission of all grant proposals and reports; overseeing the academic programs of the European Studies Center, in coordination with the director and academic advisor; working closely with departments and schools regarding new course development to support the mission of the ESC and to advance its current priorities; coordinating international partnerships, including the Italian Fulbright and DAAD partnerships and their related visiting short-term visiting faculty members; creating co-curricular and outreach programming in line with the ESC’s mission and in cooperation with the Center’s engagement coordinator and coordinator for activities, events, and partnerships; manage the center’s faculty and graduate student grant awards ; and work with the center’s financial administrator to ensure adherence to Center budgets. The Post-Doc must be able to work with minimal supervision, represent the center in a professional manner, work efficiently on multiple projects, understand budgets and exercise fiscal responsibility; and maintain good rapport with staff, faculty, students, and representatives of European and domestic partner institutions. Occasional travel and weeknight/weekend hours are required.
A Ph.D. in a discipline relevant to European Studies and experience with area studies is required. Knowledge of Europe and the ability to speak a European language in addition to English is preferred. The Post-Doc will report to the Executive Director of Academic Affairs at UCIS and the Director of the ESC.
Applicants must have satisfactorily completed all requirements for the Ph.D. degree, including any oral defense, by May 15, 2022.

The salary is $55,000 and will include a variety of fringe benefits.
