The Asian University for Women (AUW) invites applications for up to nine Fellowships in the humanities for talented young scholars to help develop an innovative humanities program within a rapidly growing and distinctive international university. Fellowships would be for an initial period of two years, at the end of which fellows would have the opportunity to apply for a faculty position. Fellows would be expected:
- To conduct research in their areas of specialisation and to publish the results
- To teach two courses per term
- To work with the Dean of Humanities and the other fellows and faculty to develop an exciting and engaging major in the humanities
- To contribute to the academic and community life of the institution.
Applications are invited in the broadly defined fields of history, literature, religion, and philosophy. Candidates with interdisciplinary interests will be especially welcome.
Each fellow will have an experienced mentor drawn from a leading international university, chosen by the Dean of Humanities in consultation with the fellow. The mentor’s role will be to work collaboratively with the fellow to contribute to the conceptualisation of the humanities program and to develop new lines of research.
AUW was established in 2008 in Chittagong, the second city of Bangladesh, as a liberal arts college devoted to fostering the talents of young women from Bangladesh and from across Asia and the Middle East regardless of their ethnic, religious, or socioeconomic background. AUW is committed to providing a liberal arts education that is inclusive and respectful of students’ cultural and intellectual heritages, and that will equip them to become leaders and creative thinkers in their careers. AUW fosters an ethos of service and justice that motivates students to graduate as leaders who ask pioneering questions, drive solutions in their own communities, and lead thinking on some of the world’s most complicated issues. They are taught by an internationally recruited faculty committed to the mission of the institution. Extensive financial assistance, funded by the generosity of donors across the world, is available to all who need it, and no student is denied the opportunity to enrol at AUW for reasons of financial need. The majority of students are on full scholarship and are the first in their family to enter university. AUW is about to start construction of a permanent campus on a 140-acre site just outside Chittagong.
Since 2008 AUW has graduated over 1200 students from 19 countries across Asia and the Middle East. They have gone on to work at government ministries, NGOs, multilateral agencies such as the World Bank, UNICEF, UNHCR, and the World Food Programme. 25% have elected to pursue graduate studies at prominent universities across the world, including Oxford, Cambridge, Columbia, Brandeis, and Ewha (South Korea).
