This is a visiting position in Public History or Public Humanities that is anticipated to be two years in duration, with possible renewal. The incumbent in this position will conduct research and collaborate in developing public history projects related to Oregon history with a special emphasis on science, technology, economies, labor, race, and environment. Relocation funds are available, and salary is competitive.
Position Duties:
36% Teaching:
- Teach one graduate class annually in museum studies, digital history/humanities, or oral history.
- Teach two undergraduate, graduate, or slash classes in US history annually.
- Conduct an annual public history workshop for undergraduate and graduate students.
54% Outreach and Scholarship:
- Conduct historical research for exhibits and programming in OSU’s new Arts and Education Complex (AEC) that address the history of Oregon State University, the state of Oregon, or the Pacific Northwest, with a special focus on science, technology, environment, and the lives and experiences of minoritized communities.
- Work collaboratively with curators at the AEC, OSU Libraries Special Collections and Archives Research Center (SCARC), OSU humanities faculty, and outside contractors to develop engaging, interactive exhibits and programming.
- Member of Arts and Education complex leadership team.
- Conduct research activities that lead to the publication of scholarly work in peer-reviewed academic journals or books; presentations at academic conferences; or public-facing writing and presentations that engage audiences outside of higher education.
10% Service:
Take part in service relating to SHPR, CLA, OSU and professional associations. Within SHPR, this may include tasks such as serving on promotion committees or peer reviews of teaching. This may also include presentations at OSU or in other local, national and international venues, as well as research and publications.
Minimum/Required Qualifications*

- Master’s degree in public history, history, museum studies or related discipline (including but not limited to journalism, Library and Information Science, Anthropology, or Sociology)

- US history training, including evidence of ability to conduct research on the history of minoritized communities, especially those in the U.S. West, the Pacific Northwest, and/or Oregon.

- A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.

- This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

Preferred Qualifications
List qualifications that you prefer applicants possess, but are not required.
- PhD or terminal degree in public history, history, museum studies or related discipline (including but not limited to journalism, Library and Information Science, Anthropology, or Sociology.
- Pacific NW specialization.
- Experience in developing and executing public history projects.
- Digital history experience.
- Firsthand familiarity working within Oregon’s African American, Indigenous, or Latinx communities.
- Strong interdisciplinary interests, skills, and experience.
- Experience leading initiatives related to racial equity, inclusion, and accessibility.
- An interest in marine, coastal, forest, desert, and/or agricultural environments and their historical and current intersections with social systems.
