Digital Humanities Media Specialist / Postdoctoral Fellow
Knox College invites applications for a Digital Humanities Media Specialist / Postdoctoral Fellow to begin July 1, 2022. The Digital Humanities Media Specialist / Postdoctoral Fellow will be an active participant in a collaborative social justice and civic engagement project funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The appointment is for three years, beginning July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2025.
Working with the faculty convenors of the “Abolition for All Time” Humanities Lab (“Abolition Lab”), the project coordinator, and undergraduate students, the specialist/fellow will support a variety of interdisciplinary projects related to institutional history and contemporary conceptions of “abolition” as a means to address social inequality and injustice. The principal responsibility of the fellow will be to promote exploration of various forms of digital presentation, communication, and storytelling to advance student engagement with humanistic inquiry. The fellow will promote innovative methodologies and pedagogies to employ digital humanities strategies, including web sites, online exhibitions, oral histories, social media posts and blogs, interactive maps, video and short documentaries, art installations, and place-based storytelling. The fellow will work with projects from early stages of their development through their presentation through traditional and innovative modes. The projects will include inter-institutional collaborations that will bring the fellow into conversation with scholars, students, librarians, and digital humanities and instructional technology staff at other colleges.

Principal responsibilities:
The successful candidate will assist the project coordinator and faculty convenors in advancing faculty and student skills in digital techniques and methodologies and will participate in the substantive intellectual work of the project to link humanistic inquiry with alternative modes of presentation and representation.
To achieve this goal, the media specialist / postdoctoral fellow will:
- Create, develop, and manage new initiatives in the digital humanities.
- In coordination with the Lab leadership, design and implement workshops, public events, and other programming to share innovative pedagogies and assignments in the humanities and humanistic social sciences.
- In collaboration with the program coordinator and relevant College offices, develop and implement the communication strategy of web and social media presentations of Abolition Lab activities.
- Serve as liaison with the Library’s Special Collections and Archives and all librarians in project development, including the digitization and preservation of products of the Abolition Lab.
- Collaborate with students engaged in independent research and capstone projects related to the Abolition Lab.
- Teach digital humanities courses for undergraduates.
- Pursue an active research agenda aligned with the candidates professional development and goals.
Required Qualifications
- Ph.D. in a humanities discipline or related humanistic social science field. ABD candidates must have the Ph.D. conferred within six months from the date of hire.
- A commitment to working with students, staff, and faculty of all backgrounds and experiences to contribute to an educational environment that values diversity, equity and inclusion.
- Experience working in an interdisciplinary humanities environment in a teaching, research capacity, programmatic or administrative capacity at an institution of higher education, museum, or library.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, as evidenced by application materials, interview, and references.
Additional Desired Qualifications
- Experience with undergraduate instruction in a setting of diverse student populations.
- Experience using humanistic inquiry to advance our understanding of the pursuit of social justice in historical and contemporary contexts.
- Experience with civic and community engagement projects.
- Experience as instructor or researcher with theory and/or methods in Digital Humanities, Certificate in Digital Humanities, or similar familiarity with key issues in digital humanities.
- Experience with academic project implementation and faculty development.
- Demonstrated organizational skills, ability to take initiative, and set and meet deadlines.
- Interpersonal skills and ability to work in a collaborative/team environment as demonstrated by application materials.
Appointment Requirements
Initial term of appointment is three years. To be appointed at the Postdoctoral Fellow title, it is necessary to have the PhD conferred at the time of hire. Appointments made without a diploma or certified transcript indicating an earned doctorate are conditional hires and are appointed on an interim basis not to exceed 6 months. Upon verification of degree the appointment will be extended to its full duration.
