The Hadassah-Brandeis Institute is a research institute at Brandeis University which supports research at the intersection of Jewish Studies and Women’s and Gender Studies. The HBI Gilda Slifka Summer Internship is an eight-week residential summer internship for 8 undergraduate and graduate students. The dates for summer 2022 are June 7 through July 29.
Based at Brandeis University, participants provide research assistance to HBI affiliate faculty and scholars, carry out their own independent research project, and attend weekly seminars and field trips to places of Jewish interest.
The duties of the Intern Academic Advisor are fourfold:
- Revising, overseeing, and teaching a weekly seminar on research methods (30%)
- Planning and leading experiential learning field trips around Boston and the surrounding areas (10%)
- Planning and organizing visiting speakers from a variety of disciplines for weekly talks with the interns (10%)
- Mentoring interns on their research projects and organizing the conference-style event for the final intern presentations (50%)
In this role, the Intern Academic Advisor develops and delivers a curriculum on significant themes and methodologies in Jewish gender studies which is the focus of the weekly seminars. They act as a mentor for undergraduate level interns by advising on independent projects through weekly individual meetings.
While most duties are confined to the period of the internship, some advance planning and collaboration will be required in the months leading up to the start. This includes participating in reviewing applications to the program, revising the curriculum and scheduling experiential learning events... The Intern Academic Advisor must be available for the full period of the internship. A driver’s license is helpful.
The Intern Academic Advisor reports to the HBI’s Assistant Director for Academic Programs and the HBI Director, as well as attends weekly HBI staff meetings .
Qualifications:
Strong background in Jewish gender studies and teaching experience in research and writing preferred. Doctoral students or recent Ph.D. graduates are encouraged to apply.
