Kathmandu University, Centre for Buddhist Studies at Rangjung Yeshe Institute (CBS) invites applications for a full-time, twelve-month teaching position in Buddhist Studies and Translation starting on August 15, 2022. This position may be extended for multiple years depending on funding and department need.
CBS offers courses in Buddhist philosophy, history, culture, and translation and in Tibetan, Sanskrit and Nepali languages. The courses combine traditional Tibetan Buddhist teachings with a modern Buddhist Studies perspective. Classes are held inside the Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling monastery complex in Boudhanath, Kathmandu. Students at RYI can earn BA, MA and PhD degrees in Buddhist Studies and Himalayan Language. RYI’s faculty have found their students a pleasure to teach, in part because RYI’s location allows for in-depth study and encourages a greater than usual degree of seriousness among the students who decide to study here.
The Assistant Professor will teach graduate seminars in RYI’s MA in Translation, Textual Interpretation, and Philology program and undergraduate courses as needed. A PhD in the field of Buddhist Studies or a related field is preferred (ABDs nearing completion will be considered), with emphasis on Buddhist translation and Indo-Tibetan studies, accompanied by teaching experience in the field. Proficiency in Classical Tibetan is required and proficiency in Buddhist Sanskrit is desirable.
In addition to the teaching salary, benefits include round-trip transportation to Kathmandu and a Nepalese visa. Salary is dependent upon experience.
