Newberry College (SC) seeks a visionary, entrepreneurial Inaugural Dean of (name to be finalized) to lead the newly formed Division of (to be finalized). The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record as an innovator in higher education, specifically focused on transforming classrooms into active, engaging learning environments. They will place high value on promoting a culture of creativity and expression. The Dean has primary responsibility for enhancing the quality of programming in the division and advocating for the value of a liberal arts education both internally and externally. They should be able to work closely with the Dean’s Council to advance the connectivity of the liberal arts to the college’s outstanding professional programs. They will also work closely with faculty within the new division to develop a shared vision for the future.
The successful candidate will understand the changing and diverse nature of incoming students. They will lead division faculty to design and deliver programming that is relevant, active, and engaging to all students. They understand how to engage students through personalized pedagogy which utilizes a broad range of alternative strategies to help students grasp the material, connect it to their passion, and build confidence in themselves. The successful candidate will be relentless in leading the development of curriculum, pedagogy, faculty development, and evaluation which celebrates diversity and enhances inclusivity and belonging.
The successful candidate will be an innovative leader who will develop and articulate a vision and strategy. They will be able to implement the institutional and division strategic plans on time and within budget.
The Dean will be a tireless advocate for the value of the liberal arts in a challenging higher education environment. They will balance the role of the division in delivering high quality academic majors and engaging and relevant coursework for non-majors working to give breadth and meaning to their studies. The successful candidate will be a transparent leader, understanding their role in shared governance. They will be an excellent communicator with strong interpersonal skills, adept at working with diverse audiences including faculty, staff, students, administration, community members, grantors, etc.
Duties and Responsibilities: This position reports to the Vice President of Academic Affairs. The dean will hold an administrative appointment with faculty rank, will teach two courses per year and advise a small number of students. They are a member of the Dean’s Council, the senior Academic leadership team.
EDUCATIONAL OR OTHER HIRING REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION
A terminal degree with experience appropriate to an appointment to a rank of Associate or Full professor with an exceptional record of accomplishment in the areas of teaching, creativity, and professional service. A change management leadership mindset. Prior administrative leadership including budgeting, policy review and formation, supervising staff, and revenue generation (fundraising, grants, community partnerships etc.). Understanding of strategic planning: developing, prioritizing, and delivering division goals and objectives. Excellent communication skills. A record of working across administrative units to achieve institutional strategic initiatives. An entrepreneurial mind-set to problem solving, resource generation, and fiscal responsibility. Excellence in program assessment and review. A record of success in recruiting and retaining underrepresented faculty, staff, and students. A record of meaningful collaboration with external constituents including advisory panels, grantors.
