The Department of History in the Faculty of Arts has the following full-time vacancy: tenured senior academic staff in the field of Jewish Studies, with a clear historical perspective and using history methods.
Position
You will contribute to the University of Antwerp’s three core tasks: research (50%), academic services (30%) and teaching (20%). After five years, the service activities will include the management of the Institute of Jewish Studies and will evolve from 30% to 40%; the research activities will evolve from 50% to 40%.
Education
- You will provide high-quality teaching in the area of Jewish history and Jewish studies.
- Your teaching role will evolve along with the study programmes. The courses you will teach include ‘Jewish Culture and Its Contexts’ (Bachelor, annual) and ‘Topics/debates in Jewish history’ (Master, bi-annual); these courses will be accessible for all students in the Faculty of Arts. You will also take up teaching activities in the History seminars for Bachelor and Master students.
- You will play a role in developing lively, student-centred and competence-driven programme components and study programmes.
- You will supervise students and their Bachelor and Master dissertations.
Research
- You will develop high-quality academic research in the area of Jewish Studies from a historical and long-term-perspective. You will develop new insights and develop a strong research orientation with regard to Jewish Culture and its history in its various aspects and contexts.
- You will initiate new lines of research and coordinate the progress of academic research projects. You will also participate in ongoing research programmes of the Institute of Jewish Studies (IJS).
- You will acquire and manage national and international research funding.
- You will publish in international journals and specialist literature.
- You will develop an international scientific network.
- You will supervise PhD students and postdoctoral researchers.
Services, Organisation and Leadership
- After five years, you will accept coordinating responsibilities within the Institute of Jewish Studies in the areas of service and research provision and/or education (e.g. the organisation of the courses ‘Judaism and Philosophy’, ‘Introduction to Jewish Culture’, ‘Introduction to Jewish Culture 2’, ‘Studium Generale Jewish Studies’, ‘Hebrew I and II’, and ‘Yiddish I and II’).
- Your leadership style will be motivating and coaching. You will be attentive to your employees’ growth and development processes.
- You will play a role in the provision of both academic services and service to society, within the institution and externally. Depending on the opportunities and possibilities you will engage in science communication, and participate in societal and policy debates.
- You will maintain contacts with and build bridges to the Jewish communities and you will contribute to the Institute of Jewish Studies’ activities furthering the interaction between the university, the Jewish communities and other social groups (see website: https://www.uantwerpen.be/en/research-groups/ijs/).
Profile
- You hold a PhD in Jewish history or in Jewish studies with a clear historical perspective and using history methods.
- You can demonstrate several years of postdoctoral experience (or equivalent).
- Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies. You have established an excellent research portfolio.
- Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision. You are motivated to develop your teaching skills further through the professionalisation opportunities available.
- If you do not speak Dutch, the administrative language of the university, you should be willing to obtain a CEFR B2 level of proficiency in Dutch within three years. As soon as you take on teaching duties as a programme component coordinator, you should be able to demonstrate a CEFR C1 level of proficiency in the language of instruction. The University of Antwerp supports international staff members through an integration trajectory and offers tailor-made language coaching in compliance with Flanders’ statutory language regulations.
- You demonstrate leadership potential and organisational skills.
- You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
- You have clearly proven management capacities and are prepared to have your management skills assessed.
What we offer
- We offer a full-time appointment as a member of the Senior Academic Staff (Dutch: Zelfstandig Academisch Personeel, ZAP). The level of your appointment (assistant professor, associate professor, professor or full professor) is determined on the basis of your professional experience and academic qualifications. Junior ZAP members are usually offered temporary appointment as a tenure track assistant professor for five years, which is then followed by permanent appointment as an associate professor. Appointment as an associate professor or higher leads to permanent appointment (tenure) after a maximum of three years. A favourable performance appraisal is always required for permanent appointment.
- Your gross monthly salary is calculated according to the pay scales for Senior Academic Staff.
- You will receive ecocheques, internet-connectivity allowance and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
- The planned start date is 1 October 2022.
- You will do most of your work at the City Campus in Antwerp in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
