The Department of History, Political Science, and Geography at Mississippi University for Women (MUW) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor appointment in African American history, beginning mid-August 2022. The search is open with regard to research focus, but we especially welcome applications from scholars who have experience teaching undergraduates and supporting undergraduate research. The successful candidate will demonstrate the qualifications and enthusiasm to teach a broad range of undergraduate history courses in the department with majors in History, Political Science, and Interdisciplinary Studies, and minors including Geography, American Studies, and Medieval Studies. We are an interdisciplinary faculty, and we seek a colleague to help us expand our programs and course offerings and help create an interdisciplinary minor connected to African American history.

In addition to African American history, the department has interest in candidates with areas of expertise including one or more of the following: women’s history and politics; oral history; public history; Transatlantic studies; and Southern studies. Experience in online teaching is beneficial, as is experience fostering undergraduate engagement and research. A background in other disciplines served by our department is also welcome.
The position requires teaching a 4-4 load and a blend of introductory survey classes and specialized upper-level undergraduate courses, as well as a sophomore methods course and senior research course as needed. Upper-level courses will be related to the needs of the program and the candidate’s field of expertise.
