The Washington and Lee (W&L) History Department invites applicants for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor of African American History beginning July 1, 2022. This position carries a 6-course teaching load distributed over the university's Fall and Winter Terms (12 weeks each). Applicants should be prepared to teach the first half of the African American History survey (African American History to 1877). Candidates whose research and teaching explores issues related to race, gender, and sexuality are particularly welcome.

Qualifications
A PhD or ABD status at the time of appointment is required.
The university requires employees to become fully vaccinated for COVID-19 and new employees must provide proof of at least their first shot prior to the first day of employment. Boosters are required. Individuals may seek a medical or a religious exemption to the vaccination requirement.

Candidates should submit a letter of application describing their teaching interests, experience, and pedagogical philosophy; summarizing their current and future scholarship; and reflecting their work with a diverse student population.
