Summary
The Humanities Collaboratory at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor invites applicants to a one-year postdoctoral fellowship dedicated to the study of the Mongol empire and its northern frontiers. We are seeking a candidate whose research topics cover any aspect of the Mongol Empire, with a focus on the Northern Realms (Mongolia and portions of Siberia). The academic discipline is open to the humanities and social sciences, including but not limited to archaeology, anthropology, history, religious studies, and literature.
The recipient of the fellowship will be working with a cross-disciplinary group of faculty and doctoral students on the project “Centering the Northern Frontier: Integrating histories and archaeologies of the Mongol Empire.” The collaborative group will facilitate the research of the recipient and will assist in the publication of potential manuscripts in suitable venues.
The fellowship appointment begins September 1, 2022 and concludes August 31, 2023. This is a 100% effort, 12-month appointment with no possibility of renewal.
Responsibilities
- The Postdoctoral Fellow is required to physically reside in the University of Michigan vicinity during the academic year, and actively participate in the events and the intellectual life of the project “Centering the Northern Frontier” in-person.
- Advance existing research, for example as the lead author of a collaboratively written manuscript (for publication)
- Present one public lecture in the Winter academic term (January-April, 2023)
- Contribute to the greater Michigan community by mentoring or advising students.
Required Qualifications
- Candidates must be able to provide evidence of successful completion of their PhD with a conferral date no later than August 31, 2022.
- Strong communication and leadership skills
- Experience with, or willingness to learn, how to collaborate with a large interdisciplinary team
Desired Qualifications
- Favorable consideration will be given to applicants who can demonstrate working proficiency in at least one language that is useful to the study of Mongol history (such as Mongolian, Chinese, Manchu, Tibetan, Persian, Russian, or applicable Turkic languages) and/or evidence for successful archaeological research in the region.
University of Michigan doctoral degree recipients are not eligible for this fellowship.
Stipend and benefits
- The total stipend for the 12-month fellowship is: US $55,000. The fellowship recipient and their dependents will be eligible for University of Michigan benefits as outlined here.
- Up to $3,000 in research funding is available for the selected fellow during the postdoctoral appointment (a budget submission and approval will be required for use of the funds).
