Applications are invited for a tenure-track assistant professor position in Hebrew Language and Jewish Cultures to begin August 2022 at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky. The successful applicant’s tenure home will be in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, a dynamic academic unit committed to interdisciplinary collaboration and dialogue among faculty with diverse geographical interests, theoretical concerns, and methodological approaches. Applicants are expected to have a Ph.D. in hand by August 2022. We seek candidates who can teach all levels of Hebrew language and any aspect of Jewish cultures (literature, rhetoric, film, mythology, folklore, Israel or religious studies) courses. The candidate will serve as the coordinator of the Hebrew language curriculum and develop other initiatives to support programmatic growth. Active participation in the academic life of the Department of MCLLC and the Interdisciplinary Program in Jewish Studies is also expected. The teaching load is 3/3 per year, with the expectation that two courses focus on language and one on culture per semester. Experience in creating/leading an education abroad program is a significant plus. Expertise in any aspect of Israel Studies, biblical Hebrew and/or history of Judaism is also desirable. Qualifications include a Ph.D. in Middle Eastern Studies, Jewish Studies, Comparative Literature (or related field) with a focus on Hebrew language and culture of any period, knowledge of current language pedagogy, experience teaching contemporary Hebrew, and native or near-native fluency in English and Hebrew. This position includes an expectation that the occupant will engage in a research program commensurate with 10% of total effort and in service to the program or university commensurate with 10% of total effort.
