Director, School of Humanities and Social Sciences
Penn State Behrend invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (H&SS). The Director serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of the School (duties comparable to those of a Dean) and reports to the Chancellor. The School has 78 full-time faculty members and offers seven Bachelor of Arts degrees in Communication; English; General Arts and Sciences; History; Political Science; Psychology; and Digital Media, Arts, and Technology. It offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing; Bachelor of Science degrees in Psychology and Elementary and Early Childhood Education; and a Master of Arts in Applied Clinical Psychology.
School initiatives include the Experiential Digital Global Engagement (EDGE) program; Susan Hirt Hagen Center for Outreach, Research, and Evaluation(CORE); the literary journal Lake Effect; the Logan Series, Music at Noon concerts; labs for digital cinematography, virtual and augmented reality, and digital humanities; and a radio station, television studio, and newspaper. Since the majority of General Education courses are housed in the School, H&SS faculty teach nearly every student at Penn State Behrend.
Candidates should have a teaching and research record with credentials commensurate for an appointment at the rank of full professor with tenure in one of the School's academic disciplines, inclusive of a terminal degree or its equivalent in organized research or professional practice, a demonstrable record of administrative experience and strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
The successful candidate will be expected to work effectively with campus and university administrators on behalf of a diverse group of students and faculty from a broad range of disciplines; contribute to the development of innovative interdisciplinary programs; exemplify a commitment to shared governance; participate in the design and implementation of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility initiatives; and actively engage in fundraising and outreach efforts.
Essential duties of the Director include the following:
• Collaborate with faculty, staff, and key stakeholders to provide a strategic vision for the School and implement strategic planning initiatives.
• Cultivate and maintain an inviting, collaborative, and productive atmosphere for faculty, staff, and students.
• Recruit and support a diverse faculty committed to undergraduate and graduate teaching.
• Advocate for faculty and support their productive program of teaching, research, and service.
• Secure faculty and staff hiring and other resource allocations.
• Develop and maintain relationships with community partners and prospective employers.
• Steward the academic, service, and outreach mission of the School.
• Provide leadership in curricular development, implementation, and assessment in collaboration with the faculty.
• Support, guide, and evaluate faculty members through promotion and tenure; evaluate faculty and staff members for annual review.
• Lead efforts in the recruitment and retention of students by developing strategies to increase interest and enrollment.
• Enhance the visibility of the School.
• Manage the School's budgets.
• Secure gifts and endowments working with the Chancellor and the Office of Development and University Relations.
• Apply and develop policies that reflect the interests of students, faculty, staff, college, and University.
• Provide visible and active leadership for the College's commitment to diversity across all programs and initiatives.

The region has a favorable cost of living, offers a wide variety of cultural and recreational resources, has a strong manufacturing base, and is in close proximity to metropolitan areas of Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Buffalo.
