The Center for Language Studies (CLS) at Brown University seeks a dynamic language professional for a full-time position as Visiting Lecturer in Yoruba beginning July 1st, 2022. The ideal candidate has experience teaching at the university-level. This is a two-year appointment and the possibility of renewal contingent upon a successful review and the continued needs of the university.
Brown University, located in Providence, Rhode Island, has a thriving department of Africana Studies and a Program in Development Studies and wishes to expand its existing language program in Yoruba. Through study of the language, we seek to support work and scholarship exploring the impact, transformation and resignification of Yoruba, as a diasporic language, in the literature and cultures of various societies in the Americas. We expect the candidate to be motivated to grow the program through excellence in teaching and through programming initiatives relevant to undergraduate students. The Center is especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their research, teaching, and/or service to the diversity and excellence of the academic community. The new colleague will join the faculty in World Languages and Cultures. The teaching load is 6 courses per academic year (2 semesters).
Qualifications
1. Ability to teach multiple levels of Yoruba; 2. Familiarity with and commitment to innovative methods of language instruction; 3. Experience with online language teaching preferred; 4. Minimum of Master’s degree or equivalent in language pedagogy, modern languages, applied linguistics or related field required; 5. Native or near native-proficiency in English and Yoruba; 6. Ability to teach a first-year undergraduate seminar in English on a topic pertaining to the candidate’s discipline and research is especially welcome; 7. Fluency in another language is desirable.
