Job Duties and Responsibilities:
The primary teaching assignment is U.S. Racial & Ethnic Survey, plus U.S. surveys (US History to/since 1877), and additional assignments in least one field of U.S. social history (such as African American, Latino/a, Native American, or Asian American); involvement in student success initiatives; maintain office hours; participate in curriculum development and assessment, academic and career advisement, professional development, and college, departmental, and faculty organization activities.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicant must meet the minimum qualifications of a History faculty discipline at the college. • Master’s in history OR Bachelor’s in history AND Master’s in political science, humanities, geography, area studies, women’s studies, social science or ethnic studies OR the equivalent.
• Must have evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the socio-economic, academic, cultural and ethnic diversity within the community college student population, including students for whom English is not their first language, first generation college students, and students with physical and/or learning disabilities as these factors relate to differences in learning styles.

Preferred Qualifications
Doctorate or ABD in US History from an accredited college or university; command and currency in the discipline, including major historiographical debates and active participation in professional activities; demonstrated experience teaching at a community college, with a record of advising students and developing and implementing classroom pedagogy and initiatives to improve student retention and success and to close equity gaps; demonstrated an equity-minded understanding of the needs and challenges of SMC students inside and outside the classroom; demonstrated experience with online learning management systems and online teaching; demonstrated experience with departmental and institutional activities; and a commitment to SMC's mission of educating ethical, informed, and engaged global citizens.
