The History program in the School of Humanities at the University of Southern Mississippi invites qualified applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in History with expertise in Public History. Individual research emphasis is open. In addition, the successful applicant should have a background working in one or more of the following: community organizations; state, local, and federal historical agencies; historic preservation associations; Digital History; K-12 schools; or private historical contracting. The successful candidate will direct our graduate Public History certificate program, contribute to the Public History curriculum, and expand our professional development initiatives at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Successful applicants will offer undergraduate and graduate courses in Public History as well as World History surveys, upper-level and graduate courses in their field of specialization, and direct theses and dissertations in a doctoral-granting program.
The University of Southern Mississippi is home to the Center for Oral History and Cultural Heritage, the Center for the Study of the Gulf South, and active programs in Digital Humanities.
USM is a student-centered R1 research university located in the “hub” city of Hattiesburg, only 90 miles away from historic sites in New Orleans, Jackson, Mobile, Biloxi and the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Applicants are expected to demonstrate an active research agenda. Promise of excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service are expected. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
