North Carolina State University, History
Department Head, History
|Institution Type:||College / University|
|Location:||North Carolina, United States|
The History Department is a diverse group of scholars covering many areas of specialization. All our tenure-track faculty are active researchers who produce scholarly publications, museum exhibitions, and digital or documentary projects, and many have been awarded numerous prizes and fellowships. We also pride ourselves on outstanding teaching. We offer small classes that allow a great deal of individual attention. In addition, our faculty advisers offer close contact and personal attention to each student. The History major is a place to get the feel of a small college education in a big, state university.
The department of thirty-one tenure-track professors has about two hundred majors in three undergraduate programs—the Bachelor of Arts, the Bachelor of Arts with a Teacher Education Concentration, and the Bachelor of Sciences. All programs offer a great deal of student choice in courses and electives, allowing the pursuit of either a broad educational experience or a focused study. Our graduate programs offer three distinct degrees: the PhD in Public History (26 students), the M.A. in History and the M.A. in Public History (44 students in MA programs). All graduate degree programs require a broad foundation in history.
The Department of History is seeking an outstanding individual with a strong commitment to academic and research excellence commensurate with the expectations of a major research university, a proven record of effective leadership, and a visionary approach to administration. The Department Head will assist in promoting research, outreach, graduate training, and undergraduate education in the department.
The Department Head reports to the Dean of the college and is responsible for the administration of the department. The Head provides leadership in support of faculty research, teaching, mentorship, and service efforts; recruits, hires, and supervises faculty and staff; manages departmental budgets and enrollment; provides guidance in the strengthening and development of graduate programs in History and Public History, and promotes the department through leadership in college, university, and external strategic initiatives. The successful candidate will possess an outstanding record of research, teaching, and leadership accomplishments along with a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
