The History Department at California State University, Sacramento invites applications for a probationary, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Public History and Asian Pacific Islander Desi American History to begin Fall 2022. Individuals who will have attained a PhD in History, Public History, or a related field by August 15, 2022 are encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate will teach courses in Public History and APIDA History. Our new colleague will offer undergraduate and graduate courses in Public History and should have a strong interest in supervising graduate students. Candidates are expected to have demonstrable accomplishments in the field of Public History, broadly defined (e.g., an exhibit, community-engaged project, management of an archival project). Successful candidates will also be prepared to design and offer courses in histories of the Asian American experience.
Additional teaching requirements include undergraduate survey courses in US history, historical methods seminars, and undergraduate and graduate seminars. Additional position requirements include:
• engaging in research and scholarly activity related to Public History,
• engaging in research and scholarly activity related to APIDA History,
• supervising undergraduate and graduate research in Public History and APIDA History,
• advising majors,
• serving on department, college, and university committees,
• and applying professional expertise to work with our regional APIDA community partners and build new relationships to the benefit of our campus and the greater Sacramento community, including a willingness to advance Sacramento State’s Anchor University initiative.
The Capital Campus Public History Program at Sacramento State is a long standing and well-respected regional institution. Students can pursue an MA in Public History, a PhD through a partnership with the University of California, Santa Barbara, or undergraduate coursework focused on public history skills and careers. The department has robust course offerings in theories and methods of public history as well as intensive internship experiences with our partners at the local, state, and federal level. Faculty and students have ample opportunity to work with our regional partners in community projects that prioritize the voices of under-represented groups in local and California history.
Sacramento is the state capital of California and one of the most diverse cities in the nation, with a rich and ongoing history of migrations from Asian, Pacific Island, and South Asian countries. As the heart of the region’s higher education community, Sacramento State is an Asian American & Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution dedicated to access, academic excellence, and inclusion. The Asian Pacific Islander Desi American Faculty and Staff Association provides a forum for the inclusive community of Asian Pacific Islander Desi American faculty and staff across Sacramento State.
Our department’s majors reflect our campus community, with students from a diverse range of backgrounds, most working full-or part-time, and many of them the first in the family to pursue a college degree. The History Department seeks candidates with the ability to work with diverse students and colleagues. The PhD in History, Public History, or a related field must be completed by August 15, 2022. Review of applications will begin December 1, 2021; position open until filled.

Candidates must upload the following attachments with the electronic application:
1. a cover letter addressing teaching and research;
2. a curriculum vitae, including contact information (phone and email) for 2 references;
3. a teaching portfolio including syllabi and a statement of teaching philosophy;
4. a diversity statement (see description above);
5. two examples of scholarly work: one traditional piece of historical writing and one publicly engaged writing sample (e.g., an exhibit script, historic register nomination, grant application, finding guide, podcast, or blog post)
6. graduate transcripts (unofficial accepted, official required for interview).
Candidates must also have two (2) recent letters of recommendation sent to the search committee at history@csus.edu.
