The Montana State University Department of History & Philosophy invites applicants for a tenure-track Historian of Early America and the Atlantic World whose work focuses on topics related to Vast Early America. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in their areas or specialization and participate in the department’s growing M.A. and Ph.D. programs and its public history program. All faculty are encouraged to develop new courses that integrate scholarship and teaching, and to take advantage of the university’s many opportunities for interdisciplinary research. Montana State University is a Tier 1 Research university and the teaching load is commensurate with similar departments in other high-productivity research universities. MSU is located in a rapidly growing micropolitan area with rich cultural resources. BIPOC+ applicants are encouraged to apply.
Required Qualifications
- Ph.D. in History or related fields by August 15, 2022
- Demonstrated preparation and expertise (or promise of expertise) in History of Early America and the Atlantic World
- Demonstrated promise of excellence in both teaching and scholarship
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated preparation and expertise (or promise of expertise) in public history (including digital humanities)
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Teach lower division, upper division, and graduate courses in Vast Early America and the Atlantic World and related subjects commensurate with the candidate’s experience
- Maintain an active research program leading to books and publications in peer-reviewed journals and other venues
- Advise undergraduate and graduate students
- Participate on department, college, and university committees as appropriate
- Perform other duties as assigned

The Department
The Department of History and Philosophy at Montana State University has a strong record of research, teaching, and service, with a mission to fully integrate all three. The research agendas in the department include the American West, public history, environmental history, U.S. history, science, environment, and technology, Asian studies, philosophy of science, and ethics. The department offers majors and minors in both History and Philosophy, along with several tailored options within History, including History-Teaching and History-Science, Environment, Technology and Society. It also offers a minor in Museum Studies. The Department grants Ph.D. and M.A. degrees in both History and American Studies, and has a strong tradition of working with allied programs and departments, including Native American Studies, geography (Earth Sciences), and English. The Department directs both the Center for Science, Technology, Ethics and Society and the Ivan Doig Center for the Study of Lands & Peoples of the North American West.
