College of Arts and Letters Latinx Cohort Hire of 6 Tenure-Track Faculty
The College of Arts and Letters at James Madison University invites applications for a cohort hire of six outstanding, tenure-track faculty working broadly across Latinx studies in several interconnected areas. We are hiring in the departments of English; Modern Languages; Media Arts and Design (which includes journalism); Communication; Writing, Rhetoric and Technical Communication; and Sociology. We are looking for excellent applicants within particular disciplines and fields, but also scholars and teachers eager to work collaboratively across them. Our research and teaching focus is increasingly multi-disciplinary, providing abundant opportunities to work creatively with colleagues from many parts of the university. We are open to many subfields, but are especially interested in colleagues bringing a Latinx focus to writing and media, intersectionality, racial and social justice, citizenship and civic engagement, transnationalism, border studies, social inequality, technical rhetorics, diaspora/migration, health, gender/sexuality, indigeneity, Latinidades, and policy-inflected research.
Arriving as a cohort with broadly shared interests, successful candidates will enhance existing strengths in Latin American, Latinx, and Caribbean Studies, global studies, and the humanities and social sciences at large. This round of hiring follows a successful Arts and Letters seven-faculty cohort hire in 2020-21 that focused on racial and social justice. Three of those seven faculty work in Latinx studies, with appointments in History, Justice Studies, and Political Science. We are poised to expand this important and growing field. The cohort initiative aligns with JMU’s commitment to faculty diversity and advances its commitment to an anti-racist agenda throughout Academic Affairs. JMU has a campus-wide Hispanic Caucus and a large and growing number of Latinx students across all our programs.
The College of Arts and Letters provides a solid foundation for faculty creativity, collaboration, research, and teaching. With 270 full-time faculty, 3,500 majors, and supportive alumni networks and boards, we are an intellectually vibrant college of ten academic departments in the humanities, social sciences, media, and communication arts. Our student and faculty diversity is rapidly increasing; we excel in global education and community engagement; and we have a demonstrated commitment to creating a culture of inclusivity. The College supports cohort hires with research assistance, mentoring, faculty networks, and community building. Harrisonburg, a close-knit city with a growing Latin@ community, is located in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, two hours from DC and Richmond, and one hour from Charlottesville. The region combines high economic activity with an attractive cost of living.
We welcome applicants with a terminal degree in a relevant discipline or field and a strong research and teaching portfolio. Candidates at the dissertation stage with particularly compelling records will also be considered. We are especially interested in applicants who have a demonstrated commitment to building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment. Application materials will vary slightly by department, but candidates should be prepared to submit a letter of application outlining teaching and scholarship/creative interests, a diversity statement, and an updated CV. Review of applications for these positions begins November 6, 2021.
