The Department of American Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a candidate for the George B. Tindall Assistant Professorship (tenure-track) in Southern Studies with an emphasis on the material and expressive cultures of the South from a local, regional, or hemispheric perspective. We seek a scholar with a demonstrated strength in food studies as well as other areas such as art, landscape, textiles, performance, and/or visual culture. Candidates must have a PhD at the time of appointment or be able to present one in the first year of hire. The selected candidate will teach a 2/2 teaching load for the academic year. We acknowledge that food studies in this place called the “South” has changed tremendously in the last decade, and especially since the onset of the pandemic; we are particularly interested in candidates who engage their work in material cultures and food studies through a critical American Studies and/or Critical Ethnic Studies lens. The Department of American Studies is a leader in the field of food studies and our faculty contribute actively to work in the field, nationally and globally. We offer a robust set of undergraduate courses at the intersection of studies in the South, material culture and food studies that candidates will find support the pedagogical aims of their research projects. Collegiality and ethical leadership define our departmental culture. Ours is a department that takes seriously the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion. We have a robust mentoring plan, a commitment to community engagement with a dedicated faculty executive committee seat for such work and can offer a candidate opportunities to partner with the surrounding community.
