Summary: The Department of History seeks an assistant professor, full-time, 9-month, tenure-track, specializing in PK-8 History/Social Studies Education. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is hiring 3 assistant professors (English, Math, Social Studies) for its new program in Pedagogical Content Knowledge for Elementary Teaching (PCKET). We are seeking a group of innovative educators who are excited about the opportunity to collaborate on teaching, curriculum, opportunities for students, and research. Employment begins August 6, 2022.
Required Qualifications and Education:
- Doctorate in social studies education or other related fields with a specialty in social studies education expected by August 2022 (ABD candidates will be considered for a two-year contract with provision that the doctorate degree must be completed by December 2023);
- 3 years PK-8 teaching experience;
- Evidence of critical, reflective thinking about the teaching and learning of history/social studies at the PK-8 level or teacher preparation;
- Commitment to contribute to the multi-disciplinary elementary teacher preparation program;
- Commitment to maintaining a productive program of scholarship in history/social studies education;
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access.
Preferred Qualifications and Education:
- Experience in multicultural contexts and/or with English language learners;
- Demonstrated potential for successful teaching in history/social studies teacher education;
- Demonstrated potential for successful research and scholarship;
- Experience in pre-service teacher preparation or providing in-service professional development;
- Grant participation or curriculum development related to PK-8 history/social studies, teacher education, or professional development;
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact with others with respect, empathy, and cultural humility;
- Ability to work productively with colleagues with flexibility and creativity.
Responsibilities - Essential Functions:
- The successful hire will be expected to engage in the teaching and ongoing development of social studies courses for elementary pre-service teachers.
- Duties each semester include a 9-credit hour teaching load in social studies teaching methods courses and integrative PCKET courses, baseline scholarship and service, and a significant focus (equivalent to 3 credit hours) of additional responsibilities in teaching, scholarship, and/or service depending on the candidate's interests and the department’s and PCKET program needs. Department faculty are expected to participate in the life of the department.
