FACULTY POSITION IN HISTORY
Truman State University
Truman State University seeks a diverse pool of applicants for a full-time non-tenure-track assistant professor in Asian history (geographical and chronological coverage open, but must be able to teach courses on gender and modern China) to begin August 2022.
Responsibilities: Ability to teach lower-level surveys in Asian and world history, an upper-level survey of modern China, and upper-division major electives and graduate courses in Asian history; to supervise undergraduate research; and to contribute to our university-wide interdisciplinary programs. It is required that candidates have the background necessary to teach courses in gender history. The successful candidate will be expected to be familiar with on-ground, hybrid, and online teaching pedagogies and fulfill additional faculty duties (such as mentoring of students in high-impact experiences) and provide service to the university and community.
Required Qualifications: This position requires a PhD in Asian History or closely related field in hand by June 1, 2022.
Applicants will be evaluated on:
- Academic qualifications.
- Evidence of, or potential for, success in teaching excellence in Asian and world history surveys; a variety of major electives including research courses, and senior capstone; and graduate seminars.
- Evidence of, or potential for, mentoring high-impact experiences, such as research at both the undergraduate and graduate level, utilizing existing library collections; engaging students in service learning; teaching in desirable subfields (e.g., digital, disability, or environmental history) or geography (particularly GIS).
- Evidence of commitment to liberal arts education, with undergraduate student development and accomplishment, particularly in critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Evidence of, or potential for, providing effective academic and career advice to undergraduate majors.
- Interest and background in interdisciplinary and/or cross-disciplinary teaching, including contributing to required first-year (Self & Society, Truman Symposium) and junior (Junior Interdisciplinary Seminar) campus-wide initiatives and interdisciplinary minors,
- Evidence of developing critical-thinking and problem-solving skills in undergraduates and mentoring High Impact Experiences (undergraduate research, service-learning, study abroad), or demonstrated potential to do so
- Strong oral, written, and interpersonal skills
- Compatibility with the department’s needs; complementing existing faculty strengths in terms of class coverage
Compensation and Rank: Salary for this position is $40,000; benefits package includes health insurance, retirement contributions, and reimbursed assistance for moving expense
Program: The Department of History is part of the School of Social and Cultural Studies. The department has 7 fulltime faculty members, approximately 110 undergraduate majors, and 30 minors. The department also offers courses in Truman’s Dialogues curriculum, provides support classes for a number of pre-professional programs including the Masters in Education program.
