The Department of English at Emory University seeks applications from scholars with expertise in Native American and Indigenous Literary and Cultural Studies broadly defined. We are searching for a scholar who has a critical, interdisciplinary orientation to the study of sovereignty, nation, race, gender and/or sexuality. The position is at the tenured Associate or Full Professor rank. Candidates will be at the forefront of current scholarship that is redefining Indigenous literary and cultural studies, and rewriting academic, legal, and/or popular narratives of Indigenous peoples. The successful candidate will be an active scholar with a national and/or international reputation who is grounded in Indigenous knowledge systems, and is committed to working with Indigenous students and communities. Teaching will be at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. All applicants must have a demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring a diverse student body. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in English or in a relevant field.
The candidate will contribute to shaping the future of Native American and Indigenous Studies at Emory, where faculty, staff, and students are building an initiative that will impact generations to come. Focusing on visibility, representation in the curriculum, and enhancing faculty research, this collaborative work aims to cultivate meaningful relationships with local communities and those who have traditional or historic relationships to Emory’s campuses, especially Indigenous communities of the Southeast. The candidate will join a growing cohort of scholars in Native American and Indigenous Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences, as well as institutional partners in the Carlos Museum, University Libraries, and the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, who seek to facilitate meaningful change in the campus’s engagement with Native students. Our needs for faculty growth in this area align with the strategic plans outlined by Emory College (the ECAS Strategic Plan) and Emory University (One Emory). Emory’s growing distinction in research on gender, sexuality, race, and culture crosses Emory College and the professional schools. The Emory English Department is home to a vibrant and intellectually diverse Ph.D. program and continues to attract, mentor, and place many of the most innovative leaders in the field.
We acknowledge that Emory University was founded in 1836 on the historic lands of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, 15 years after the First Treaty of Indian Springs (1821) dispossessed the Muscogee of land including both Emory campus locations. We also acknowledge that Emory University’s founders were slaveholders, and the Oxford campus was originally constructed by enslaved people. To these peoples and their descendants, we acknowledge the grave injustices inflicted on them, and we recognize the indelible mark of their labor on the creation of the university. We understand Indigenous Studies to be simultaneously regional, hemispheric, and global while always anchored by the epistemologies of, and responsibilities to, those on whose lands we are located. We are open to any area of specialization and also invite applications from scholars whose research centers Muscogee (Creek) peoples and/or who plan to teach about local histories.
