Associate Professor, Global Asian Studies

The Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia, University of Tokyo, is seeking to appoint a tenure track associate professor to promote innovative and global Asian studies beginning from October 2022 at the earliest (see Sato, J. and S. Sonoda, 2021, “Asian studies “inside-out”: a research agenda for the development of Global Asian Studies,” International Journal of Asian Studies, Volume 18, Issue 2, July 2021, pp. 207–216).
The purpose of this appointment is to strengthen the existing Department of Pioneering Asian Studies at the Institute that aims to promote global Asian studies. The candidate must have a Ph.D. in Asian Studies or in related field at the time of application. Although there are no specific regional or disciplinary requirements, we expect the applicant to demonstrate the following skills and commitments: 1) Ability to conduct innovative research that goes beyond conventional area studies with firm grounding in at least one country in Asia, and a good command of the language(s) of the region. 2) Commitment to publish internationally. 3) Ability to conduct research and teach in English. Knowledge of Japanese is desirable. 4) Willingness to assist and acquire skills necessary to manage the International Journal of Asian Studies (Cambridge University Press), published biannually by the Institute.
The appointment begins on 1 October, 2022. The starting date is negotiable. Probationary Period: Six months from the date of hiring. Place of Work: Hongo Campus, The University of Tokyo, 7-3-1 Hongo, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo Working Hours: Discretionary labor system: Working hours is deemed as 7 hours and 45 minutes per day. Days Off: Saturdays, Sundays, national holidays, the end of the year and the beginning of the year (December 29 - January 3). Stipend and benefits: Competitive package in accordance with the regulations stipulated by the University of Tokyo, which includes health insurance and an annual research fund.

Copies of three representative works such as articles or book chapters, with abstracts. 3. A copy of the applicant’s Ph.D. certificate. 4. The names, affiliations, and contact details of three persons who can comment on the scholastic potential of the candidate. 5. An essay describing the applicant’s research plan for the next 5 years, with reference to a concept of global Asian studies (maximum 1,500 words in English).
