Mount Allison University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track interdisciplinary position in Mi’kmaw Culture. The ideal candidate demonstrates a broad experience in and commitment to Mi’kmaw culture, but the discipline and area of specialization are open. Areas in which we seek teaching and research expertise include expertise in Mi’kmaw language, as well as areas such as knowledge systems and research methodologies, ecological knowledge, wholistic, and land-based practices, archaeology, oral and/or written literature, community engaged learning, as well as health and wellbeing. The appointment will be made at the rank of Assistant Professor and will commence on 1 July 2021, subject to budgetary approval.
The committee recognizes and values the significance of Mi’kmaw education and its function within the diversity of career pathways that contribute to a candidate’s growth as an Indigenous scholar. The candidate’s experience working ethically in partnership with Mi’kmaw communities and funding bodies will be considered key assets. Candidates who have undertaken an Indigenous path to education as well as those who have pursued a path through academia will be considered for the position.
We seek candidates who will contribute broadly to programming and teaching in our developing Indigenous Studies programs and in Community Engaged Learning, with a focus on Mi’kma’ki. The successful candidate will be expected to teach five 3-credit courses at all undergraduate levels including INDG 1001: Introduction to Indigenous Studies course (either as part of a team or on a rotational basis). The candidate will be given the opportunity to choose a home academic unit in consultation with the related faculty’s Dean. The candidate is also expected to develop a creative, independent, and productive agenda of research, creative activity and/or engaged community work.

- a statement that identifies them as an Indigenous person, as expressed by their relationship to a Mi’kmaw community or their personal or family narrative that describes their past and current relationship to such a community
- a Teaching Dossier (i.e. teaching philosophy, sample course outlines, and (if available) evidence of teaching effectiveness)
- a statement of research interests or creative practice or professional portfolio
- a relevant sample of related work
- names of three referees/references
- one letter of reference from a Mi’kmaw Elder, community, or research partner.
Review of applications will begin on 15 March 2021 and will continue until the position is filled.
