One Associate (junkyōju 准教授) or Assistant Professor (kōshi 講師) position with tenure in Japanese Premodern Literatures and Languages, Kyushu University, Faculty of Humanities and Graduate School of Humanities.
Description
The Faculty of Humanities and Graduate School of Humanities at Kyushu University (Fukuoka, Japan) opens a position in the field of Japanese Premodern Literatures and Languages. We seek a scholar with expertise in a premodern field such as Japanese literature, poetry, theater or other literatures, including those in religion, history, geography, and other humanities areas.
The tenured appointment (i.e., immediate tenure) may be made at either the Associate Professor (in the UK, equivalent to Lecturer) or Assistant Professor level with promotion to follow at subsequent appropriate stages.
The home department for the successful candidate will be the International Master’s Program (IMAP) in Japanese Humanities and the recently established International Doctorate (IDOC) in Japanese Humanities, both of which are situated within the Graduate School of Humanities. The successful candidate is expected to conduct and publish original research; participate in departmental and university committees and advisory bodies; and to compete for research opportunities at Kyushu University, and grants at the national and international level. There are many available resources for research at Kyushu University, both competitive and assigned, including support for books, collaborative research, fieldwork, travel to conferences, etc.
The successful candidate will teach and advise graduate students at IMAP and IDOC, as relevant. Concurrently, they will also teach undergraduate courses and conduct select supervising at the School of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation (kyōsō gakubu 共創学部). See https://kyoso.kyushu-u.ac.jp/en/
All teaching is in English.
Basic Qualifications
- A PhD degree in hand at the time of the application
- Teaching experience (ideally, experience other than as a Teaching Assistant)
- Native or near-native fluency in English
- Excellent, near-native, or native fluency in Japanese
- Ability to teach kanbun and/or bungo (kobun古文, kogo古語, etc.)
- Expertise in other East Asian literatures is desirable
- Ability to teach one course per year in global performance theory at the undergraduate level

Employment period
Start date will be June 1, 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter (the last possible start date is October 1, 2021)
Remuneration
Salary shall be paid in accordance with the Annual Salary System (published April 1, 2020). The annual salary is determined by the relevant rules of the university and consists of a base salary based on age and experience, a performance bonus, and various supplements and/or benefits.
Working hours are calculated as 7 hours and 45 minutes per day according to the System for Flexible Working Time Regulation in Specialized Professions.
Regular off days are Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays and the period between December 29 and January 3.
Benefits include health insurance, pension insurance, mutual retirement pension programs of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology / Mutual Aid Association, and employment insurance of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare. Employment will be in the name of Kazuhiro SHIMIZU, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Kyushu University.

Interviews and Schedule
