The Department of Global Studies, part of the larger School of Culture and Society, invites applications for a position as assistant professor in China Studies. The position will commence on 1 August 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.
An assistant professorship is a full-time, three-year training position that involves research and teaching at the BA and MA level and includes an obligatory course in university teaching for assistant professors. Following the assistant professorship period, an associate professorship within the same academic field will be announced in open competition.

The position
The position will be associated with the China Studies programme at the Department of Global Studies, School of Culture and Society, and is a combined teaching and research position.
The position is offered with a view to attracting talented applicants with an excellent and well-documented track record in innovative and internationally recognised research on politics in China and a specialisation in contemporary, national and/or local politics. Applicants must be fluent in Chinese.
Research
The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to core activities at the School of Culture and Society and Aarhus University in general and to strengthen the Department of Global Studies’ research activities and output in particular. He/she will be expected to take an interest in interdisciplinary research collaboration within the Department of Global Studies and its Global Studies research programme, the School of Culture and Society, the Faculty of Arts, and beyond.
The successful applicant will also be expected to develop new research projects with internal and external partners and to raise external research funding.
The applicant’s research credentials and publication record within the field, i.e. politics in China, will be assessed not just on existing publications and other research contributions but also on research potential.
Past research achievements will be assessed based on the active research time of the applicant in question. We therefore ask applicants to specify any career breaks they have had (for instance due to maternity/paternity leave) in order to gauge their research productivity.
Education
The successful applicant will be required to teach and supervise in China Studies at BA and MA levels of the department’s degree programmes and will be expected to have teaching experience at university level. Furthermore, s/he will be expected to contribute to the teaching and further development of multidisciplinary Area Studies programmes, especially in a recently launched Global and Area Studies MA programme (taught in collaboration with representatives of other existing Area Study programmes) including general courses on theory and methodology. https://kandidat.au.dk/globaleomr%c3%a5destudier/

Knowledge exchange
It is expected that the successful applicant will engage in knowledge exchange as described in the strategy for the Faculty of Arts https://arts.au.dk/om-arts/strategi-arts-2020-2025/, for instance research cooperation with private companies, government consultancy, cooperation with civil society partners or the public dissemination of knowledge. Applicants should document any prior experience within the field of knowledge exchange.
Qualifications
Applicants must hold a PhD in China Studies/Area Studies, Political Science, Sociology/Anthropology or a related discipline. They must also be able to document the following:
- An internationally oriented research profile documented through relevant academic publications, and possibly other research contributions, at the international level
- Experience of university-level teaching and a commitment to teaching development and the supervision of student projects
- Experience of active participation in international research collaboration
- Full (high) proficiency in the Chinese language
- Experience of or interest in obtaining exteral research funding

Language
At the Department of Global Studies, courses are generally taught in Danish or English. Applicants must be able to teach and supervise in English at university level.
If the successful applicant is not fluent in Danish, s/he will be expected to acquire the language within a period of approximately two years.

China Studies at the Department of Global Studies
We study and teach about China within the academic tradition of language-based area studies. Our main emphasis is on Chinese society, culture and history in contemporary and twentieth-century Chinese society with a particular research focus on Chinese socialisation, migration, cultural production and language acquisition. We have a comprehensive BA programme in China Studies and an MA programme in Global and Area Studies with a China specialisation, and we are an active part of the PhD programme Global Studies, Anthropology and Study of Religion. The China Studies section collaborates closely with other sections of the Department of Global Studies to produce interdisciplinary research and to offer interdisciplinary teaching. We are also engaged in several outreach activities, such as further education and media appearances.
Global Studies at Aarhus University
As an Area Studies programme, China Studies is an integral part of the Department of Global Studies at Aarhus University, which consists of language-based regional study programmes, comprising China, Japan, India/South Asia, Russia, Brazil, Europe and International Studies. It focuses on a broad spectrum of original language source-based research and the teaching of history, culture and society. The approaches used have roots in both the humanities and the social sciences and aim to introduce creative teaching methods solidly founded in research.
