Antioch University and the Environmental Studies Department
Founded in 1853, Antioch University emphasizes learner-centered education to provide students with the knowledge and skills to lead meaningful lives and to advance social, economic, and environmental justice. Antioch University New England (AUNE), one of Antioch University’s five regional campuses that draws and serves students from across the country. We use a distinctive graduate education pedagogy that mixes academic rigor with experiential learning and social engagement. The NE campus is located in the beautiful Monadnock Region of southwestern New Hampshire, which offers numerous cultural, recreational and educational opportunities.
The Environmental Studies Department at AUNE educates visionary, effective leaders in a collaborative interdisciplinary setting, founded on academic excellence and principles of justice and sustainability. Our department is aware of the long and well-documented history of the ways in which the environmental movement, particularly in the United States, has oppressed cultures, peoples and voices, which has prevented some groups from fully participating and contributing to environmental issues. And environmental problems disproportionately impact historically marginalized groups—including people of color, people from working class backgrounds, Indigenous communities, women and LGBTQ people. We believe these communities must be centered in our work and scholarship. Hence, we strongly encourage applications from people with these identities and/or who are members of other marginalized communities.
AUNE’s Environmental Studies Department is home to a range of innovative faculty- and student-led research and public engagement initiatives, including the Antioch Bird Club, Center for Climate Preparedness and Community Resilience, Center for Spatial Analysis and Remote Sensing, Community Garden Connections for food justice, Conservation Psychology Institute, Monadnock Ecological Research & Education Project, The Institute for International Conservation, Wild Treasures, and Whole Terrain literary journal.
Antioch University provides equal opportunity for all qualified applicants and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, gender, ancestry, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, family status, or disability in matters affecting employment or in providing access to programs.
