Assistant or Associate Professor in Old Testament Studies
The Department of Culture and Society at Aarhus University invites applications for the position of assistant professor or associate professor in Old Testament Studies.
In the application, candidates must state explicitly whether they are applying for the position of assistant or associate professor.
If an assistant professor is appointed, the position will be a three-year, full-time training position involving research and teaching obligations and publications at PhD level (as a minimum). After three years, and subject to appropriate funding, an associate professorship in Old Testament Studies will be announced in open competition.
If an associate professor is appointed, this will be a full-time permanent position.
The position is available from 1 August 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Place of employment: Department of Theology, Nobelparken, Jens Chr. Skous Vej 3 – 7, 8000 Aarhus C.
The university wants its staff to reflect the diversity of society, and thus welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of their personal background.
The position
The Department of Theology at Aarhus University has always had a strong section in Old Testament Studies in both its study programmes and research. The position is offered with a view to attracting a talented, innovative and dedicated candidate who is expected to play a key role in the continued creation of internationally recognised research areas within Hebrew Bible/Old Testament Studies at the Department of Theology.
The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to core activities at an international level at the School of Culture and Society in general and the Department of Theology in particular in the following areas: research, education, talent development and knowledge exchange.
Participation in the daily life of the Department of Theology is of a high priority, and we emphasise the importance of good working relationships, both among colleagues and with our students.
Research
Applicants must possess the qualifications and ambitions necessary to conduct research in the field of Hebrew Bible/Old Testament Studies. The School of Culture and Society emphasises the importance of high-quality research as well as international and interdisciplinary collaboration, participation in collective research projects, and the ability to attract external research funding. In addition, the Department of Theology has a significant international profile and strong research networks. Accordingly, we are looking for a candidate with a strong research profile and track record in Old Testament Studies. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and take part in the activities of the department’s theological research programme and its Old Testament research unit, and to develop and contribute to research initiatives in terms of new research projects with internal and external partners and external research funding.
In the application, applicants should explicitly present their vision and plans for the development of Old Testament Studies at Aarhus University with respect to research, teaching and external research funding.
The research activities will be evaluated in relation to the actual research time that has been available to applicants. So we encourage applicants to specify any periods of leave they have had without research activities (e.g. maternity/paternity, illness, etc.), enabling us to subtract these periods from the span of their academic career when evaluating their productivity.
Teaching
Applicants for the assistant professorship should be prepared to teach and supervise students at BA and MA level, while applicants for the associate professorship should also be prepared to teach and supervise at PhD level.
The successful applicant is expected to contribute to the development and application of innovative teaching methods. The Department of Theology expects that the successful applicant will participate actively in the development of a dynamic teaching environment in dialogue with students and other professors. The position involves teaching duties in Old Testament Studies as well as responsibility for the development of interdisciplinary teaching activities. This also includes (team) teaching of other and comparable topics in the study programmes at the Department of Theology and beyond, including the new Master’s degree programme in Diaconia. In addition, the position may include responsibility for teaching courses in Biblical Hebrew. See http://cas.au.dk/en/about-the-school/departments/theology/
If an assistant professor is appointed, the person concerned will be obliged to complete a course in university teaching devised especially for assistant professors.
We emphasise the importance of maintaining a dedicated and respectful relationship between staff and students, so the ideal candidate should be able to demonstrate and exemplify their commitment to participatory teaching initiatives and student involvement as part of their teaching portfolio.
Talent development
If an associate professor is appointed, the successful applicant is expected to contribute to talent development in Old Testament Studies and at the Department of Theology in general. This means that the successful applicant will be expected to recruit and supervise PhD students as well as teaching and developing PhD courses.
