The Department of Africana Studies at Smith College invites applications for a position in the social sciences, to begin July 1, 2021. The department will also eventually include the Inaugural Ruth J. Simmons Chaired Professor. This is an opportunity to join a department with a reputation for excellence in research and teaching. Successful candidates should be prepared to engage actively with diverse students across the liberal arts.
This is an open-rank search for a tenure-track or tenured appointment depending on rank at the time of hire. Teaching responsibilities will regularly include 200 and 300-level courses, as well as gateway courses such as Intro to Black Culture, Methods of Inquiry in Africana Studies, and the senior capstone seminar. Other courses may be taught depending upon the candidates’ fields of specialization. Ph.D. in Africana, Sociology, Anthropology, Political Science, Economics, American or Women and Gender Studies, or a relevant field, is expected by the time of appointment. Candidates with a strong foundation in the family, labor/class, religion and spirituality, the judicial system and incarceration, black political thought, diaspora, transnationalism, black internationalism and/or global studies, and quantitative methods, are encouraged to apply.
Located in Northampton, MA, Smith College is the largest women’s college in the country and is dedicated to excellence in teaching and research across the liberal arts. A faculty of outstanding scholars interact with students in small classes, as advisors, and through student-faculty research projects. The College is a member of the Five College Consortium with Amherst, Hampshire and Mt. Holyoke Colleges, and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
