Job Description:
The History Department of Seattle Pacific University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the History of the United States. The start date of this position will be September 2021. We prefer that candidates have PhDs in hand by August 2021. Candidates should provide evidence of strong teaching skills and of a deep commitment to diversity.
We seek a candidate who can teach about underrepresented histories of the U.S. from any time period and/or who can place U.S. history within a larger regional context. This could include Atlantic World, Caribbean, and/or Latin America. Possible research or teaching specialties that would be welcomed: racial and ethnic minorities (including Asian-American, Latinx, African-American, and/or indigenous history), immigration/diaspora, women/gender/sexuality, social class/labor history, urban history, diverse Christian perspectives and traditions, and/or environmental history.
Requirements:
Teaching responsibilities will include two U.S. history surveys (early and modern), along with electives that correspond with the candidate's areas of specialty. They will also teach a general education course on World History from 1500-present. Ideally, the candidate could also contribute to our Museum Studies track. It is hoped that the candidate will eventually be able to teach a class on the History of the Pacific Northwest, which is a required class for aspiring teachers in Washington State. A typical full-time teaching load is 2-2-3 on the quarter system. The department is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through teaching, research, and service.

This is a full time position with excellent benefits. SPU pays the employee premium for medical, dental, and vision insurance.
