Smith College, Music
Assistant Professor in Music Theory
Institution Type: | College / University |
Location: | Massachusetts, United States |
Position: | Assistant Professor |
The Department of Music at Smith College invites applications for a tenure-track, full-time position in Music Theory at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin July 2021. We seek an exceptional scholar of music theory, broadly defined, with a promising research profile and record of presentations and/or publications. Evidence of methodological and analytical breadth is encouraged. We especially welcome applications from those who approach music theory with an interdisciplinary perspective: for example, whose research and teaching explores the intersection of music and questions of race, class, gender, and sexuality.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach an annual two-semester introductory music theory course for undergraduates introducing analytical techniques and concepts from within and beyond the Western classical repertoire. Teaching load is 2-2. Other courses will depend on the candidate’s area(s) of specialization and the needs of the department, and might include topics such as digital and electronic music, vernacular and non-Western music, and music and media. The successful candidate will have a creative understanding of the role that music theory might play in the context of a liberal arts college. A Ph.D. in Music Theory is expected by the time of appointment. Candidates from groups underrepresented in music theory are encouraged to apply. Review of applications will begin October 15, 2020.
