The School of Humanities at Rice University invites applications for the Baker College Chair for the History of Science, Technology and Innovation, at the rank of associate or full professor, to begin July 2021. The Baker College Chair will be a notable scholar whose scholarship and teaching deal with innovative topics in the history of science and technology, broadly defined, and who is committed to excellence in undergraduate and graduate education, and local, national, and international outreach. Area of specialization, regional competencies, and time period are open. The Baker College Chair will have an active research program, be expected to play an important role in undergraduate and, as appropriate, graduate programs in the department, and offer courses of interest to Rice students majoring in the humanities and STEM fields.
The successful candidate will join a robust department of historians with more than 25 tenured and tenure-track faculty at Rice, which is situated at the heart of the nation's fourth-largest city and has a long tradition of excellence in both science and engineering and the humanities. The Baker College Chair will have an opportunity to build bridges with a number of new initiatives at Rice, including the Data Sciences Initiative; the Medical Humanities Program; the Technology, Culture and Society Initiative; the Ion Innovation Hub; the Baker Institute for Public Policy, and Environmental Studies in the School of the Humanities.
