The School of Culture and Society at the Faculty of Arts, Aarhus University, invites applications for an assistant professorship in Nordic religion within the Department of the Study of Religion.
The position is a full-time, three-year training position, and subject to appropriate funding there will be an opportunity for a subsequent associate professorship. The position is available from 15 January 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position
The assistant professorship involves research and teaching obligations and publications at doctoral level (as a minimum).
The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to core activities at the School of Culture and Society in general and the Department of the Study of Religion in particular in the following areas: research, education, talent development and knowledge exchange.
Research
The position is being offered with a view to attracting a talented person who is expected to play a key role in the continued development of innovative, internationally recognised research areas at the Department of the Study of Religion with a particular focus on Pre-Christian Scandinavian religions. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to international-level research in these religious traditions, and to relate findings to the broader field of comparative religion.
The Department of the Study of Religion at Aarhus University has a pronounced and significant international profile and a strong research network with clear comparative and interdisciplinary components. The successful applicant will be expected to take part in developing the research programme in the study of religion, and to contribute to research initiatives including new research projects with internal and external partners, and external research funding.
The successful applicant will be required to take part in the daily activities of the department.
Education
Applicants should be prepared to teach and contribute to developing courses, learning and supervision at all levels of the department’s degree programmes in the study of religion (BA, MA and PhD), and will be expected to have teaching experience at university level. Applicants must also be able to collaborate on teaching in connection with other degree programmes offered by the School of Culture and Society.
Knowledge exchange
The successful applicant will be expected to engage in knowledge exchange as mentioned in the strategy for the Faculty of Arts, for instance in cooperation with civil society or the public dissemination of knowledge. Applicants should document any prior experience within the field of knowledge exchange.
Qualifications
Applicants must have a PhD degree or equivalent qualifications in the study of religion or related fields (for instance archaeology, anthropology, history, Scandinavian studies or linguistics) with a particular research focus on religion. Applicants should have teaching experience corresponding at least to the experience gained during a PhD degree programme.

Research environment
The assistant professor will be part of a strong international research environment at the department and will be expected to contribute to ongoing research activities by participating in meetings, seminars, etc., and to stimulate the development of new research projects at all levels within the field of the study of religion. The Department of the Study of Religion is a strong research environment including research competences in the history of religion, contemporary religion, Islamic studies, cognition and experimental studies. The environment is interdisciplinary and comparative in its organisation and working methods, and the researchers are involved in a wide range of research projects with colleagues from other fields, such as theology, the humanities, the social sciences and the natural sciences.

- thorough knowledge of pre-Christian Scandinavian religions, including relevant philological skills and concomitant theoretical literature
- a relevant and internationally oriented research profile
- experience of or interest in collaboration and research with other fields within the study of religion and with other disciplines
- experience of or interest in active participation in international research collaboration
- experience of or interest in obtaining external funding
- experience of or interest in interdisciplinary teaching, including innovative teaching methods
- experience of or interest in digital/computational humanities
- experience of or interest in supervising student projects, and interest in research talent development.
