Position Title: Affiliate Faculty of Instruction in Integrative, Religious, and Intercultural Studies (IRIS), Detroit Campus
The Integrative, Religious, and Intercultural Studies Department (IRIS) at Grand Valley State University (GVSU) is located within the Brooks College of Interdisciplinary Studies with its primary departmental faculty, staff, and administrative offices based on GVSU’s Allendale Campus in Lake Ontario Hall. This affiliate faculty of instruction position is a 9-month, full-time, academic year position to be housed within the IRIS Department with the goal of primarily supporting the LEADS (Lifelong Educational Attainment for Diverse Students) Initiative run in collaboration with GVSU’s Center for Adult and Continuing Studies. Normal teaching load is 24-credits/year. This faculty member’s primary location would be on GVSU’s Detroit Campus.
It is expected that this affiliate faculty member will become certified to teach online/hybrid courses at GVSU prior to the start of Fall Semester 2020 (August) and will demonstrate innovative and effective teaching with particular strengths in adult, online pedagogy. The faculty member is also expected to participate in regular professional development activities that support their teaching activities, regularly participate in department meetings, and be in ongoing communication with the Department Chair and/or Assistant Chair. Specific additional duties associated with this role will include:
- Partnering with the Unit Head and Assistant Chair(s), Center for Adult and Continuing Studies, regional IRIS faculty, and the Brooks College Office of Integrative Learning and Advising to organize and support professional networking and community-based learning opportunities as needed;
- Representing the IRIS Department at GVSU graduation, alumni, recruitment, and kindred events that serve Detroit campus-based students or prospective students;
- Attending IRIS Department monthly meetings and reporting to the IRIS Department on activities on the Detroit Campus.
- Supporting teaching and student needs on the GVSU Detroit campus, to be determined by the IRIS Department Unit Head and GVSU Center for Adult and Continuing Studies;
- Providing faculty advising support for Integrative Studies majors and certificate/badge earners to facilitate retention to graduation; and
- Assisting students to find internship and practicum opportunities, as well as facilitating research opportunities for students served by the Detroit campus.
Compensation for additional advising and administrative duties will be negotiated with the Brooks College Dean’s Office.
- Demonstrated teaching expertise at the undergraduate level;
- Enthusiasm about teaching online and/or hybrid, accelerated courses;
- Experience working with, and understanding of, underrepresented and diverse populations including adult learners and returning students;
- Commitment to serving diverse communities of learners, collaborating with diverse colleagues whose expertise spans disciplinary and geographic boundaries, GVSU’s General Education Program, and the GVSU Center for Adult and Continuing Studies;
- Demonstrated commitment to collaborating with colleagues including ability to work well as a team with both faculty and staff;
- Demonstrated ability to work independently while remaining in active touch with collaborators and supervisors;
- Strong written and verbal communication skills;
- Completed Master’s Degree in a relevant field by the time of application;
- Academic qualifications that qualify the individual to teach high demand courses within the Integrative Studies core, Global Communications Certificate, and Leadership Certificate including two or more of the following: INT 100 (Reflect, Connect, Engage), ITC 100 (Introduction to Intercultural Competence) or INT 201 (Diversity in the U.S.), INT 312 (Collaborative Communication), INT 314 (Life Journeys), INT 331 (Person and Profession in a Global Environment), DS 360 (Ethics of Digital Culture), and REL 335 (Sacred Texts, Global Communications).
- Strong organizational skills that span both administrative and teaching-focused work;
- Demonstrated commitment to the value of a liberal education;
- Commitment to innovative digital pedagogy and continual improvement as an instructor; and
- Commitment to working with adult learners as part of degree completion initiatives.
- Demonstrated teaching excellence at the undergraduate level in online and/or hybrid formats;
- Demonstrated teaching excellence in working with adult learners and diverse communities of learners;
- Experience with integrative and community-based learning in a higher education context;
- Experience advising and mentoring undergraduate students;
- Experience advising and mentoring undergraduate internships, practicum, and/or community-based research;
- Strong community ties in Southeast Michigan, including the City of Detroit;
- Demonstrated ability or strong potential to teach a range of core courses within two or more of the department’s academic programs. Examples include: INT 301 (Interdisciplinary Research Methods), INT 310 (Creativity), INT 314 (Life Journeys), INT 323 (Design Thinking), INT 341 (Leadership for Social Change), INT 400/401 (Global Visionary Leadership/American Visionary Leadership), and INT 495 (Senior Seminar/Capstone in Integrative Studies).
- Academic training in adult learner pedagogies.
Salary: $46,000 with benefits
