The Department of Politics at Bates College invites applications for a tenure-track position focusing on Contemporary Political Theory starting in the fall of 2020. The department is particularly interested in candidates whose research focuses on topics such as power, justice, and inequality, through the lens of race and ethnicity. Candidates who demonstrate success with marginalized and underrepresented students and lived experiences are encouraged to apply. Applicants should show a strong commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching, to scholarly research, and to the implementation of inclusive pedagogies. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in political science completed or nearly complete. We are open to and encourage a variety of methodological approaches and paths to scholarly excellence. Faculty members teach five courses per year (usually two courses per semester and one course during a three-week spring “short term”) as well as advise individual senior theses. This position would require introductory and intermediate courses in political theory as well as advanced seminars in that field. The college and the department are committed to enhancing the diversity and inclusivity of the campus community and the curriculum.
