The Social Science Research Council (SSRC) is a Brooklyn, NY–based, independent, international, nonprofit organization devoted to the advancement of interdisciplinary research in the social sciences and related disciplines through a wide variety of workshops and conferences, fellowships and grants, summer training institutes, scholarly exchanges, research, and publications. The SSRC seeks to hire a Program Officer to support its work on violent conflict, conflict prevention and management, and the United Nations (UN). The principal responsibility of the position is to manage, in partnership with the Program Director, the Conflict Prevention and Peace Forum (CPPF) while also supporting other aspects of the SSRC’s work. CPPF works to strengthen the capacity of the United Nations system for peacebuilding and the prevention, management, and resolution of conflict by providing UN decision-makers with access to expert analysis from international academics, practitioners, and others outside the UN system.
Responsibilities
In partnership with the Program Director of the CPPF and Understanding Violent Conflict programs, the Program Officer will:
- Work closely with United Nations counterparts to design projects (workshops, commissioned research) that support UN conflict prevention and peacebuilding strategies in multiple regions (Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America) and on cross-cutting thematic issues.
- Plan, organize, and facilitate workshops and meetings for the UN in New York and internationally. This includes preparing meeting agendas, drafting and editing concept notes and event summary notes, and coordinating and facilitating correspondence with participants and all relevant stakeholders during workshops and meetings.
- Identify leading scholars and research institutions working on/in regions affected by conflict and help expand CPPF’s expert and research networks on/in these regions.
- Develop and manage project and program proposals and budgets, and write grant reports for donors.
- Write and edit concept papers and policy briefs for UN decision-makers and program funders.
- Supervise research and program assistants, interns, and consultants as needed.
- Work with the Program Director on new program development and funding proposals for international activities at the SSRC.
Qualifications
- The successful candidate will bring the right combination of skills, commitment to evidence-based policymaking, and demonstrated interest in the fields of conflict prevention and conflict management.
- PhD (in-hand or expected within current academic year) in one of the social sciences, the humanities, or a closely related field (political science, international relations, history, international political economy, international development, etc.) required.
- Professional and research focus on peace interventions in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, or Latin America, with willingness to work across multiple regions.
- Knowledge of the UN system and international peace and security operations required.
- Direct experience in international organizations, NGOs, media, or research highly desirable.
- Spoken and written fluency in Spanish or French, in addition to English, required.
- Program management and grant writing and budgeting experience highly desirable.
- Experience organizing and moderating workshops, meetings, and conference panels.
- Exceptional writing and editing skills and demonstrated ability to write on deadline and for multiple audiences.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, political judgment, and high degree of professionalism.
- Team player with demonstrated ability to take initiative and work independently.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and respond flexibly to changing demands in a fast-paced policy research environment.
- Interest in working at the interface of academia, policy, and philanthropy.
- Must be able to travel internationally several times a year.
Terms, Salary, and Benefits
Annual salary will be commensurate with experience. This is a grant-funded position, and renewal is based on successful performance and availability of funds. Provisions are made for professional staff to continue their development as a scholar while at the Council.
This position is based out of the Brooklyn, NY office and as such conforms to the general operating hours of the SSRC standard work week.
