Responsible to provide excellence in teaching through the fulfillment of the mission and strategic goals of the Department of History and Related Fields by teaching in the field of United States History.
The successful candidate will also connect knowledge with the discipline of political science. The candidate should demonstrate the ability to teach introductory and upper-level undergraduate classes in U. S. history, as well as support the department and university by teaching the introductory History of Western Civilization course. In rotation, may support the department in teaching classes on historical methods, the history senior seminar, as well as other fields related to history, such as political science.

Essential job responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Teaching a combination of introductory and upper-level courses in the history of the United States, general education history courses (specifically, History of Western Civilization), service courses supporting the majors and minors of the department, and courses in subfields such as geography, economics, and political science, as qualified.
- Advising History majors as well as students in the Politics, History, and Economics (PHE) major, helping to coordinate and promote the PHE major, holding office hours, attending department meetings, fulfilling assigned departmental duties, and other functions as requested by the Department Chair, College Dean, or Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs.
- Abide by all University policies.

Minimum Education and Experience:
- Ph.D. with area of specialization in United States history strongly preferred. Ph.D. in a related field will be considered. ABD applicants will be considered. Ideal candidates will have a subfield in American political history. A secondary specialization in an area of modern world history and/or politics preferred.
- Demonstrated teaching experience at the college or university level and commitment to scholarship through publication and academic presentations.
- Maintain a personal relationship with Jesus Christ; is a consistent witness for Jesus Christ; maintain a kind, Christ-like attitude in dealing with and ministering to people within and outside of Northwestern; and faithfully uphold and embrace Northwestern’s mission, doctrinal statement, and Declaration of Christian Community.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Commitment to excellence in teaching and academic advising of undergraduates
- Ability to integrate Christian worldview into classroom instruction
- Ability to interact with a variety of individuals in a professional, courteous, and tactful manner
- Ability to maintain a flexible schedule
- Knowledge and understanding of basic computer skills
- Ability to type efficiently and accurately use the computer to carry out job responsibilities
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Understanding of and agreement with Northwestern’s Declaration of Christian Community and Doctrinal Statement
- Ability to pass a background check upon hire and periodically throughout the course of employment
