The University of Central Missouri (UCM) invites applications for Chair of the School of Communication, History, and Interdisciplinary Studies, which includes Africana Studies; Women, Gender, & Sexuality Studies; and Religious Studies. This is a 12-month tenured, administrative position with the option of teaching up to six credit hours per year. The Chair is expected to provide leadership in teaching, research, student success, recruitment, and in the promotion of diversity, equity, and inclusion within the school.
The successful candidate should possess an earned doctorate and have a distinguished record of teaching, scholarship, and service that merits appointment as a tenured full professor in an area closely aligned with one of the academic disciplines within the school. Experience with responsibility center budgeting, alumni relations, fundraising, and external grant writing is highly desirable.
The school offers four undergraduate majors and eight minors, two certificates, and two master’s degrees. Personnel in the school include 28 full-time faculty, two staff, six graduate teaching assistants, and 17 student employees, with a total budget of $2.9 million. The Communication Studies Program, with 6.5 FTE, supports the Speech & Theatre Education program as well as a B.S. and M.A. in Communication Studies. The Digital Media Production program, with 8.5 FTE and 1.5 engineers, supports a B.S. and M.A. in Communication. The History Program, with 9.25 FTE, supports the Social Studies education programs as well as a B.A., B.S., and M.A. in History. Interdisciplinary Studies, which includes programs in Religious Studies, Africana Studies, and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, with 3.75 FTE, supports minors and individualized majors in each of the three programs. All programs in the school support the General Education program at UCM.
Other units and activities within the school include the Muleskinner (the student newspaper), the Speech and Debate Team, Digital Media Labs and Television Studio, UCM Media Network, Missouri State Archives Internship program, and the Show Me Justice Film Festival. The school also has a robust program of service learning and study abroad and is committed to excellence in both teaching and research.
The chair will have the following general responsibilities and should bring experience in these areas:
1. Managing budget, personnel, assessment, and development in the school
2. Facilitating and promoting a strong collegial and intellectual climate within the school
3. Promoting diverse values, voices, and identities among faculty, staff, and students
4. Performing management functions necessary for the effective and efficient operation of the school
5. Promoting high quality instruction of undergraduate and graduate programs
6. Facilitating faculty recruitment, promotion and tenure, and faculty and staff professional development
7. Evaluating the teaching, scholarship, and service of all members in the school.
