Dominican University invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for the position of Director of the Sister Mary Nona McGreal, OP Center for Dominican Historical Studies.
The McGreal Center promotes the research and writing of the history of the Order of Preachers in the United States. The Center facilitates opportunities for serious research related to the U.S. Dominican family’s significance in the life of the Order of Preachers, the church, and the nation. It collects, organizes, and preserves documents and artifacts according to best archival practices, specializing in collections of collaborative endeavors of the Dominican nuns, friars, laity, and sisters of the United States.
The new Director of the McGreal Center will have the opportunity to set forth a vision for new research projects, promote and expand the use of the Center’s collections and previous publications, and build new partnerships for the study of Dominican life. The Director will assume leadership at a promising moment. The McGreal Center enjoys strong relationships with a number of scholars of American Catholicism, and is part of a dynamic environment for creative thinking about cultural preservation among U.S. Dominican institutions. It has robust on-campus partnerships with the School of Information Studies, Rebecca Crown Library, Rosary College of Arts and Sciences, and Division of Mission and Ministry. The Director is surrounded by a dedicated team, including part-time archivist, graduate intern, undergraduate student worker, multiple volunteers and an Advisory Board. The Director of the McGreal Center will also have the opportunity to pursue scholarly research and teaching. The Director will also serve as adjunct lecturer in Rosary College of Arts and Sciences, teaching three courses annually.
The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. or terminal degree in history or other field related to the core work of the Center; bring knowledge of and familiarity with the Order of Preachers and the history of American Catholicism; proficiency in Microsoft Office and digital archive technologies; excellent verbal and written communication skills; evidence of successful collaborative work; strong organizational skills balanced with a capacity for flexibility; and managerial experience.
The Director will be expected to assume office by February 3, 2020.
