The Yaschik/Arnold Jewish Studies Program at the College of Charleston invites applications for a position as a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Jewish Studies in the area of American Jewish life, broadly conceived, to begin August 16, 2020. The Program seeks an active scholar who will have the opportunity to teach surveys of Jewish history and upper-level courses. The successful candidate will transition into the position of Director of the Pearlstine/Lipov Center for Southern Jewish Culture and will therefore also possess strong administrative skills and a keen interest in public programming. Operating alongside two other academic centers and supported by a large endowment, the Center is an integral part of the Jewish Studies Program. The director will have substantial resources to advance its mission. Ability to offer or develop courses on southern Jewry and/or in the area of African American Studies is a plus.
The is part of the School of Languages, Cultures, and World Affairs. Candidates whose research employs international, trans-regional, or interdisciplinary perspectives are especially encouraged to apply. An earned PhD in a relevant discipline, such as, but not limited to, history, religious studies, sociology, anthropology, or urban studies, is required by August 15, 2020. ABD candidates with degree completion expected by that date will be considered but will be ineligible for renewal beyond the first year without the PhD. Preliminary interviews will be held by Skype/Zoom. Select candidates will be invited for campus interviews.
