The Department of History at James Madison University invites applications for a tenure-track position in African history at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor to begin August 2020. Preference will be given to candidates specializing in east and southern Africa with an ability to contribute to the African, African-American and Diaspora studies program. The Department of History consists of 35 full-time faculty members dedicated to excellence in undergraduate and graduate education at the MA level.
Teaching duties include introductory and upper level courses in African history as well as topical courses related to the successful candidate’s areas of specialization. Candidates must demonstrate their commitment to building an equitable and diverse environment with their research, teaching and service and must demonstrate their potential to teach in small and large classroom settings as well as our innovative History Lab. PhD in hand by August 2020 is preferred.

Applicants will complete a faculty application and submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, evidence of teaching effectiveness (as Other Document #1), and up to three samples of scholarly writing (as Other Document #2). The cover letter should include a discussion of the candidate’s research interests, teaching experience and philosophy, and contributions or potential contributions to the diversity of the classroom, program, and university. Evidence of teaching effectiveness may include course syllabi, assignments, and summaries of course evaluations, if available.
