The Foreign Studies College of Hunan Normal University, Changsha, China, is hiring up to 6 faculty positions at the level of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor, in the following fields: (1) Literature; (2) Linguistics; (3) Translation Studies. Native speakers of English, Spanish, German and Portuguese are preferred. Applications should be sent until October 31, 2019. However, applications received later will still be reviewed on a rolling basis each month until positions are filled. Selected candidates will be invited for a Skype interview. All positions start in September 2020.
Applicants must hold a PhD in a relevant field, and are expected to demonstrate a record of both research and teaching excellence, or potential for excellence, commensurate to rank. Truly outstanding researchers may be eligible for appointment as distinguished professors under national or provincial faculty recruitment programs (Note: Faculty at the full professor level will only be hired if research record demonstrates eligibility for a distinguished professorship). English native speakers without a PhD are eligible to apply too and would then be considered for a position as lecturer, while pursuing their degree in the university's joint CompLit/Chinese Studies PhD program (double degree in the US/Canada/Europe/Hong Kong and China), which is currently set up.
All positions will begin in September 2020, and are non-tenured renewable appointments. Applicants are expected to be present during the full lecture period (eight months).
Teaching load is six to eight hours per week each semester, across either two or three courses for an academic year; competitive compensation packages are negotiable at levels appropriate to rank. Supervision of Bachelor, Master and PhD theses, involvement in a research team, one of the research centres (e.g. Comp.Lit., Translation/Interpretation, Comparison of International Media Cultures, International Chinese Studes), the participation in the organisation of conferences at the College, editorial work with one of the anglophone journals established at the College, curriculum development and administrative self-management are expected.
Publication of two scholarly papers (with indication of the affiliation) in English double blind peer reviewed journals annually is expected.
No knowledge of Chinese language or prior experience in China is required; however, applicants should be able to connect to local pedagogical norms.
The Foreign Studies College is one of China’s top research units dedicated to the teaching of foreign languages and literatures, as well as translation/interpretationj studies, and is a major beneficiary of the central government’s heavy investment in public higher education. Once led by Qian Zhongshu (one of modern China’s most famous authors and literary scholars), the College continues to maintain an outstanding national profile, as well as extensive international links with scholars and universities worldwide. The city of Changsha, where the University is located, is a vibrant city of over 7 million people, with three millennia of history and a rich cultural scene.
The campus has been renovated in 2017 and orients itself at international standards, with its college building, renovated in 2019 (multimedia in all classrooms), Western cuisine for Western teachers, subway station on campus, shopping opportunities on campus as well as an adjacent recreational area. Western colleagues may find a vibrant international community on and around the campus.
