The Department of History seeks applicants for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor with research and teaching expertise in digital history.
Required qualifications include a Ph.D. in history or related field by the time of appointment; a record demonstrating promise of excellence in research; and an ability to teach courses in data and digital history. Preference will be shown for candidates with demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching; a record of interdisciplinary collaborations on data and digital history projects; the potential for obtaining external funding; and an interest in contributing to the department’s strengths in public history, race and gender, war and society, social and economic inequities, and the history of science, technology, medicine, and environment. The position is open to all research fields in history; preference will be shown for candidates with research areas in geographical regions outside the United States and chronological periods before 1900.
The successful candidate will teach courses in digital history at the undergraduate and graduate level, mentor students pursuing digital humanities projects, and collaborate with digital humanists in related programs and departments. The successful candidate will teach courses on data in social context, including Introduction to Data in Social Context and Topics in the History of Data in Social Context, as well as new courses to be developed in collaboration with faculty in the Department of History and related programs at the University. The successful candidate will teach courses and pursue research in the candidate’s major fields of study defined chronologically, geographically, and thematically. The standard teaching load is two courses per semester.
The digital history position is associated with the Data and Decisions Destination Area, one of nine transdisciplinary communities promoting research collaborations and creating opportunities for developing and teaching new courses to meet Pathways undergraduate course requirements. The faculty position is administered by the Department of History, which will be the tenure home, with research, teaching, and service expectations consistent with Department of History guidelines. Occasional travel to national conferences is required.

The successful candidate will be expected to work collaboratively with colleagues in Virginia Tech’s many interdisciplinary programs as well as work effectively with a diverse community in support of Virginia Tech’s Principles of Community.
