The University of Oklahoma is searching for an outstanding historian in the field of American Indian history. The position is tenure-track (or tenured) with a 2-2 teaching load. The search is open rank and open field but special consideration will be given to historians of the nineteenth century. The successful candidate will be expected to make a substantial contribution to OU's doctoral program in American Indian history. We also encourage applicants with additional teaching and research expertise in one or more of the cognate fields of American West, Environmental, Latin American history. The University of Oklahoma (OU) is a Carnegie-R1 comprehensive public research university known for excellence in teaching, research, and community engagement. As part of a signature initiative of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of History seeks to teach and promote an appreciation for Native History and culture – an obligation derived from respect for place and in recognition of the needs of the Native peoples of Oklahoma, a state with 39 Federally Recognized Tribal Nations and one of the highest percentages of people tracing descent from American Indian populations. In collaboration with the Native American Studies Department, we also support the OU Native Peoples Initiative (NPI) to create the premier center in North America for research placing the cultures of Native peoples and the sovereignty of Native nations at the center of academic study - spanning subjects from art, culture, religion, history to governance, law, health, business and the environment.
Qualifications: A PH.D. in History or related field by August, 2020, the time of appointment.
