The History and Philosophy Department at the State University of New York at Old Westbury is accepting applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor position to commence Fall 2020.
Candidates should be specialists in Environmental History (regional specializations of modern Europe, Latin America, Asia, or Africa preferred). They should have a demonstrated expertise in both environmental history and their regional specialization and will be expected to teach courses in these areas. The successful candidate for this position will be a key faculty member in the department's proposed Environmental Studies major. Therefore, candidates should have a broad background in environmental studies both at the general and at the research level. Specific courses that candidates must be able to teach will include: an upper division Introduction to Environmental Studies course, a course on Environmental World history (1500-present), and a course on Modern Global Environments (20th-21st Century). In addition, candidates should also have a demonstrated ability or interest in developing internship opportunities relating to environmental studies with organizations in Long Island or the greater New York area. Candidates should also be able to teach other departmental offerings such as historiography, and senior seminar.
Old Westbury prides itself on its highly diverse faculty and student body. Flexibility and innovation in the design of courses for the "non-traditional" student are important to the department. Candidates are expected to participate fully in the general work of the department by advising undergraduate majors, participating in program-building, and undertaking work for the college. The successful candidate must maintain an active program of scholarly research and publication.

We are a small, four year liberal arts college within the SUNY system. We offer a B.A. in History and a separate B.A. in the combined areas of Philosophy and Religion. We also offer content courses in our School of Education's Master of Arts and Teaching degree in Adolescence Education Social Studies. Our courses are offered in lecture/discussion in-class format and in hybrid or online formats.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in History or closely related field. (ABD will be considered with Ph.D. in hand by August 1, 2020).
- Degree specialization or dissertation topic specifically related to environmental history.
- Evidence of active research agenda in the area of research specialization.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Field of area specialization: open (modern Europe, Latin America, Asia, Africa preferred).
- Experience teaching at the college level.
- Research competence in relevant language for the research specialization.
- Experience and/or interest in developing internship opportunities relating to environmental studies with organizations in Long Island or the greater New York area.
- Experience teaching a culturally and economically diverse student population.
