Georgia State University, Assistant Professor of African-American History, Tenure-Track
The Department of History at Georgia State University (downtown Atlanta campus) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor in African-American History (period open) to begin August 2020. The university is located in the heart of a vibrant metropolitan area in the Southeastern United States. Georgia State is the largest research university in the state of Georgia and a national leader in innovative efforts to promote student success. Tenure-track faculty typically teach a 2-2 course load. Teaching responsibilities include cross-listed History/African-American Studies courses at all levels. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop upper division undergraduate courses and graduate seminars in History and African-American Studies, and to supervise graduate research for the M.A. and Ph.D. programs. The department encourages applicants with a passion for teaching and mentoring our students. The successful candidate will also have the option to hold an interdisciplinary affiliation with the Department of African-American Studies, the Institute for Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and/or other units. Ph.D. required by date of hire (August 2020).
Applicants should submit: 1) a Cover Letter (2 single-spaced pages); 2) a CV (if the doctorate is not already in hand, please indicate the expected date of graduation); 3) a Research Statement (1-2 single-spaced pages, include a narrative of past, current, and future scholarship); and 4) the names and affiliations of three potential referees. All four documents should be combined into a single PDF file (LASTNAME.FIRSTNAME.pdf) and submitted as an email attachment to Chair, African-American History Search Committee, at HistorySearchCom@gsu.edu. Those applicants long-listed by the search committee will be contacted for three reference letters and an article/chapter-length writing sample. Applications received by October 31, 2019 are assured full consideration; preliminary interviews will be conducted via Skype/Zoom.
