The Department for the Study of Culture, University of Southern Denmark (SDU) in Odense, invites applications for a 1-year postdoctoral position within the research project Medicine Man: Media Assemblages of Medicalized Masculinity, starting Jan 1 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Job description
The selected candidate will do research within the subproject of “Pleasure and desire” concerning the medicalization that middle-aged men undertake in order to enhance their sexual performance.
He/she is expected to;
1) contribute to the internet history of male medicalization by tracing the rise of Viagra through a content analysis of an archive of spam mails (e.g. https://archive.org/details/untroubled_spam_archive) and
2) to investigate changes in discourse in mentions of Viagra in Danish and American news outlets. An outcome of two articles in internationally acknowledged journals is expected.
The job description will be mainly research, additionally will be teaching to a certain extent and other tasks to a limited extent. The university will determine the distribution between the various tasks. The extent of the tasks can vary over time.
An upgrade of pedagogical qualifications is not part of the position. Thus employment as Postdoc cannot stand alone as a qualification for later employment as associate professor/senior researcher. Appointment to this position may also include teaching obligations in regard to related degree programmes.
Required qualifications
Major requirements
- A PhD-degree in gender, digital media, cultural studies or similar.
- A proven interest in the fundamentals of gender studies and/or research on medicalization.
- A detailed research plan including a description of the suggested analytical approach to the subject matter and publication strategies.

Application, salary and conditions of employment etc.
The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations), Cirkulære om overenskomst for Akademikere i staten 2019. Employment as Postdoc is temporary (max. 4 years). Employment stops automatically by the end of the period.
To qualify for the position you must have completed a PhD-degree by the application deadline.
