Yale-NUS College, Division of Social Sciences
J. Y. Pillay Chairs in the Social Sciences
Institution Type: | College / University |
Location: | Singapore |
Position: | Full Professor |
Yale-NUS College is a liberal arts college of 1000 students, with approximately 100 full-time faculty. The College is a collaboration between the National University of Singapore and Yale University. Yale-NUS students are intellectually elite, with an acceptance rate of <7%, and extremely international, representing 66 countries. They go through a unique and rigorous Common Curriculum that combines Western and Eastern traditions with contemporary skills.
We will appoint two senior scholars as J. Y. Pillay Professors in the Social Sciences. The J. Y. Pillay chairs, established in honour of Professor J. Y. Pillay, an eminent policy maker and corporate leader in Singapore, are for scholars who are at the forefront of research and education in their field. These chairs positions are available for both fulltime tenured and short-term visiting appointments.
We encourage applicants in any field/discipline of the social sciences but are prioritizing political studies in this year’s search. We welcome applications from scholars working in all areas of political science, political economy, or political thought, including those whose research bridges different disciplines. We would, for example, be interested to hear from scholars whose work explores tensions between liberal democracy and authoritarian rule, whether as a question for political theory or a subject for empirical research. Regardless of subject, we expect applicants to explain why the research they are doing is significant.
The J Y Pillay Professors will join in developing and teaching our programmes in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) and Global Affairs. They will also contribute to the College’s distinctive Common Curriculum (http://www.yale-nus.edu.sg/curriculum/common-curriculum). They will provide academic leadership through their research and teaching by engaging in significant research, teaching well, helping to develop the curriculum in the College, and mentoring other faculty. The College places emphasis on productive and impactful research programs, akin to other top liberal arts colleges in the world.
The appointee will be expected to begin duties in time for the start of the 2020-2021 academic year.
Faculty receive salaries that are competitive with the most prestigious liberal arts colleges in the world, a substantial start-up grant as well as a yearly travel and research allowance, and are able to access additional funding from Yale-NUS, National University of Singapore, and Singapore’s Ministry of Education. Most international faculty qualify for highly subsidized faculty housing. Yale-NUS College is located in Singapore, a multicultural city of six million that is known for its high quality of life and sits at the heart of a vibrant region.
